We then headed to the Spanish Steps where we found a large crowd of people. Okay so there were large amounts of people everywhere we went.
We decided to then walk to Trinity fountain which we thought was the big "make a wish fountain". When we found it, it was pretty empty and that is when we realized it was not the fountain we were thinking of, but still beautiful. We decided to take a break here and sat down on the edge of a fountain. That is when Kevin got stung by a bee. After the almost fatal bee sting (okay so he said it didn't hurt too bad I just reacted like it did) we decided we needed a good nights rest and we headed back to the hotel.
The next day was spent at the Vatican. They have a "No shorts" policy so I reluctantly put on jeans. However the only pants Kevin had were his suit pants, so that's what he wore with a t-shirt and tennis shoes. Let me tell you he looked good :)
We began the day at the Vatican Museum which was huge and very interesting. However about 1/2 way through I think Kevin and I's lack of history buffness became apparent and we started to become less interested with the sculptures and more interested in acting goofy. At the end of the Vatican Museum we entered the Sistine Chapel. This was amazing! I cannot believe all the details they put into the ceiling and how much work it was. Even though the guards kept yelling "Shhhh... No photo" everyone had their cameras out so we joined them and snapped a couple pictures of the incredible ceiling.
We then headed through security and entered St. Peters Square and went into the Basilica. This was also an incredible church with lots and lots of gold colors.It also contained the original Michaelangelo Pieta. Since Kevin and I love views so much we decided to go to the top of the basilica. And since we are cheap scapes we opted out of taking the elevator which was more expensive and took the stairs. 560 steps later we reached the top covered in sweat. Nonetheless the view was spectacular and so worth the workout. On our walk up we even got to see inside the church from the dome which was really cool. From the top you could almost see the whole city (I think we found everything but the Coloseum).
The Vatican took most of the day so with the remainder of the day we decided to go find the real "make a wish" fountain also known as Trevi fountain. Here we found lots of people (surprising huh). In our tour book it mentioned a Gelato place caled San Crispino's that was supposedly the best in Rome that was by Trevi fountain. We went looking for it and with no luck decided to ask a cop where it was. He told us where it was then pointed at a Gelato place called Valentinos and said if we wanted good Gelato to go there. We went in there where they gave a us a sample of the most delicious and creamy Gelato we had had so far. But we decided to go to the San Crispino's anyways. After eating a bowl of ice cream from there which was already our second for the day we decided Valentinos was much better and we wanted some of it. So we went back and got another cone of Gelato. Since we ate so much ice cream we were not hungry so we went to the store and bought some tomatoes, fresh mozzarella, and some basil and went back to our hotel and enjoyed a light Italian dinner.
Our first stop the following day was the Colosseum. It was another very interesting place and this one we didn't loose interest in. We got Audio guides and found that sometimes they were nice but other times they just got in the way. After spending a couple hours in the Colosseum we headed to the Roman Forums. The Roman Forums are pretty much remains of the Roman Empire. They were very interesting and very easy to get lost in. While lost in the bottom I began to get shaky so we tried and tried to find our way out. When we finally got out we headed straight to a pizzaria to get us a pizza. The pizza was very good and we sat on the side of the road and ate it and enjoyed the scenory. Our next stop was Capitoline Hill. The story is there were two brothers Romus and Remus who were nursed by a wolf as children and when they grew up they disagreed on what to build with the city, and in the end Remus was killed and Romus won, hence the name Rome. There is a museum with the famous sculpture of the brothers nursing on the wolf.
After a long walk to Piazza Navana we decided to pay for a very overpriced Granita and relax and listen to some street musicians. We then headed to the Panthenon that we found to be not very impressive and then to Valentino's again to get some more amazing Gelato.
We really liked Rome but not all the people. The public transportation there is not very good and there is not very much which means what there is is really crowded. The food was good and the Gelato was amazing. We could have eaten Valentino's Gelato 5 times a day and still not got enough.
